True Diary

3. Junior discusses the "tribes" that he's apart of on p.217. Discuss how his perception of who his tribe is has changed from the beginning of the novel to this point.

In the beginning of the novel, Junior pretty much looked down on his tribe, and a lot of stuff they did. Most if them were just drunks, and not much good from them. But, later down the road i think he has realized more of what the tribe has taught him rather than looking at things negatively. Also, once his sister passes, he started seeing that people really did care about it and him.

The Absolutely True Diary of a Part Time Indian

My first impression on Junior wasn't the best. I pretty much saw him as a downer. Junior pretty much sees himself as this weird looking loser, that's poor and nothing good will ever happen to him. But, the people on the rez don't really look up to him either. A lot of people make fun of him for having a larger head. He only has one friend, then he has his dog, which died. However, Junior seems like he might exagerate a bit in his diary. I feel like he says the truth, just not so sure if it's really as bad as he makes it seem. I have never had one before, so i can't really say i know whether people are totally truthful or not in them. But, i guess this is how Junior sees his life.

One thing i can relate to Junior about is how he draws. I haven't really drawn very much lately, but i do draw, and i used to always draw when i was upset. It has always been an easy way to get my mind off things. So i guess in a sense, drawing could be my "lifeboat" too.

"Poverty doesn't give you strength or teach you lessons about perseverance. No, poverty only teaches you how to be poor" (Alexie13). This Quote holds a pretty powerful meaning to me. I haven't really lived in poverty, but I'm not really the richest person ever. So i really can't relate. But the fact that he thinks poverty will teach him nothing but to be poor is really sad. It's sad to think that somebody's dreams can just vanish because they don't have the money to get paid attention to. Again, i can't relate, but i kind of disagree with this, I think if i lived a bad enough life, that i would want to try harder to get to the top. Even if my school was poor. I would want to strive to get noticed by anyone outside the rez.
